The credit union TruStage asked for an eye-catching data visualization appearing on multiple screens that represented 3 separate data points including website visits, phone calls, and policies signed. This piece would be in real-time and show how this information changed throughout the day. It’s main purpose was to draw in and impress potential clients utilizing an array or LED and LCD screens throughout their new glass building “The Lighthouse”.
As the lead designer and animator on a team of 8, I spearheaded the visual concept and collaborated closely with our internal developer to bring it to life.I started with visual research, taking inspiration from the benchmarking images of a painterly sunset the client liked, as well as the glass artwork that appeared near the screens.I used a combination of Photoshop, stock imagery, blending modes and After Effects to create a layering of paint strokes that moved up and down in a sine wave according to the data in real time. Through iteration and collaboration with the creative director and internal team, I designed and animated the demo you see. I then worked with the developer to make sure it got from design to final product by creating references, handing over assets and art directing the look for each screen size.
It was a challenge to create something that was both extremely visually dynamic, and could be technically translated into a program. Solution:To ensure the final deliverable met client expectations, I met with the developer and talked through the design ideas before showing the demo. I then worked very closely with the developer to art direct the color/ blending modes because blending modes differ in Unity than in Photoshop. In addition, I also made sure he had all the assets, and reference files he needed.
The final product exceeded the client’s expectations. It was successful both visually and technically on all 4 different screen types. We were able to create a centerpiece for the lobby atrium with longevity, due to ever-changing data to generate from.
